Presidio County Sheriff’s Deputies have intensified efforts to combat the illicit smuggling of livestock across the Rio Grande according to the Presidio County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page. Recent events have underscored the seriousness of this ongoing issue, with local law enforcement and federal officials working in tandem to disrupt these unlawful operations.
Several individuals faced charges after confessing to the illicit importation of horses and cattle from Mexico. Instead of using the designated U.S./Mexico port of entry, they utilized unauthorized routes, bypassing critical veterinary inspections and required documentation for legal livestock importation.
Presidio County law enforcement officials enacted stringent measures to counteract this emerging trend. Sheriff’s Deputies detained any livestock suspected of illegal importation and referred each case to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The USDA performed veterinary inspections on the detained animals and mandated proof of ownership before the livestock could be released.
