Big Bend Telecom and Big Bend Times resolve branding mix-up with a dash of humor
In a tale of mistaken initials, two well-known entities in the Big Bend region, Big Bend Telecom and Big Bend Times, have decided to put an end to the amusing yet potentially confusing mix-up they’ve been facing due to their similar abbreviations – “BBT.”
Big Bend Telecom, the nationally acclaimed innovator in rural broadband, has become a household name for its exceptional internet services that connect communities across the country. On the other hand, Big Bend Times boasts an impressive digital readership with over 3 million monthly Facebook reach and over 400,000 stories viewed on its website. Despite their distinct industries and brand identities, the commonality of their initials has led to some eyebrow-raising confusion.
Rusty Moore, CEO of Big Bend Telecom, found himself in a peculiar situation when people, particularly those not familiar with the area, began confusing his telecom company with Big Bend Times. The mix-up was primarily due to their shared initials and the fact that both businesses frequently use “BBT” as an abbreviation.
In a pleasantly light-hearted exchange, Rusty Moore approached David Flash, the Publisher of Big Bend Times, to tackle the issue head-on. Kindly, he made it clear that, as a telecom company servicing a diverse clientele, including government entities and an array of communities, he’d rather not be unintentionally associated with a news outlet that occasionally delves into investigative reporting, ruffling some feathers and leaving folks with differing opinions somewhat miffed. It’s a case of apples and oranges, really. Investigative journalism is The Times’ realm, not BBT’s cup of tea.
The confusion between the two companies is reminiscent of the situation with Spectrum, the cable company, which operates Spectrum Local News, leading some to assume that “BBT” might also signify ownership of a news outlet. However, Big Bend Telecom’s core mission is to connect communities with fiber and high-speed internet, and they have no plans to diversify into journalism.
Recognizing that Big Bend Telecom was established first and has earned its reputation in the telecom industry, Big Bend Times graciously decided to relinquish the “BBT” initials. From now on, they will refer to themselves as “The Times” as a short and distinctive name, making it clear that they are a digital journalistic powerhouse and not a telecom provider.
This resolution not only clears up the confusion but also adds a touch of humor to the situation. In the end, both Big Bend Telecom and The Times remain committed to their respective missions, serving their communities in their unique ways, with no more mix-ups in sight.
