Big Bend Open Road Race Returns to West Texas Highways This April

The legendary Big Bend Open Road Race is set to roar back into the Trans-Pecos this spring, bringing high-octane speed and adrenaline to one of the most scenic and challenging race routes in the world.

From April 22 to 25, professional drivers and racing enthusiasts will converge on Sanderson, Texas, to take on the 118-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 285 between Fort Stockton and Sanderson. With speeds that can reach over 200 miles per hour, the race has earned its reputation as one of the toughest open-road events on the globe.

Hosted at the Terrell County Courthouse, the BBORR is more than a race—it’s a celebration of precision driving, desert beauty, and small-town hospitality.

“This is one of the last places in America where racers can legally test their limits on public roads,” say organizers.

Sanctioned and supported by law enforcement, volunteers, and the surrounding communities, the race transforms U.S. 285 into a closed-course speedway for a limited time each year. The road is shut down and secured, with extensive safety and emergency protocols in place to ensure that racers can push their vehicles—and themselves—safely to the edge.

The event attracts hundreds of participants and fans from across the country and is a major source of pride and economic activity for Terrell and Pecos counties.

While the event is a thrilling spectacle, organizers note that disability access is not available at this time.
