Effort to Restore El Paso’s Sacred Heart Church Gains Momentum

The iconic Sacred Heart Church, a historic and cultural treasure in the heart of El Paso’s Segundo Barrio, is undergoing a much-needed restoration thanks to a dedicated group of volunteers. This landmark, alongside the adjoining former Sacred Heart School building and Jesuit residence, has been a beacon of faith and community since the late 19th century.

A Rich History

Sacred Heart Church and School were established in 1892 and 1893, respectively, by Jesuit missionary Father Carlos M. Pinto. Serving a community of primarily Mexican immigrants, the church became a cornerstone for the spiritual and educational needs of Segundo Barrio. The current church building, constructed in 1923, stands as one of the oldest Catholic parishes in El Paso, along with Immaculate Conception Church.

The Restoration Initiative

The buildings, ranging in age from 97 to 127 years, require extensive restoration and infrastructure updates. Limited financial resources have historically hindered these efforts. Now, an all-volunteer group, led by Father Rafael Garcia and Dr. Max Grossman, is working to change that. Their mission includes:

  • Applying for grants and tax credits
  • Fundraising within the community
  • Overseeing the restoration process, from selecting architects to project completion

The Executive Committee includes Bishop Mark Seitz, church leaders, elected officials, and experts in architecture and historic preservation, while the Advisory Council features Segundo Barrio residents and other community supporters.

Impact on Segundo Barrio

The restoration of Sacred Heart Church will set a precedent as the first project of its kind within the newly established Segundo Barrio National Historic District. This initiative, launched in 2021, aims to spark an architectural renaissance in the area.
