Photos: Lost Mine Trail in Big Bend National Park

Hiking the Lost Mine Trail was an excellent introduction to the Chisos Mountains in Big Bend National Park. The trail was by no means crowded. But, there was far more traffic than on most trails in Big Bend Ranch State Park where I’ve done most of my Big Bend hiking. I passed a about 20 other hikers during my 3 hour hike up and down.

According to the National Park Service, Lost Mine Trail in Big Bend National Park “serves as an outstanding introduction the flora and fauna of the Chisos Mountains.” The in and out trail totals 4.8 miles round trip. Hiking guides recommend visitors with limited time hike about 1 mile in for stunning views of Casa Grande and Juniper Canyon. At the end of the 2.4 mile trail, hikers gaze upon stunning views of Pine Canyon and the Sierra del Carmen in Mexico. The trail head is at mile marker 5 on Basin Road en route to Chisos Basin campgrounds and lodge.
